Mentor Training at Big Brothers Big Sisters
Is this your first time mentoring youth? We get it. Becoming a mentor is an opportunity to shape a child’s future for the better. It’s a chance to empower them to achieve and grow. However, becoming a youth mentor is often uncharted territory for many adult volunteers.
That’s why at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest, we require all new Bigs to complete a mentor training session. This session doesn’t take very long but provides the tools and knowledge to begin navigating your mentoring experience.
Purpose of Mentor Training
Our mentor training helps new mentors gain an understanding of how the mentorship program works. In our training, we set expectations and standards for the mentorship experience.
We cover the administrative side of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest, answering questions about length of commitment, how to extend/terminate a mentorship match, how to report issues, and other administrative aspects of the program. Then we will discuss tips for mentorship and how to navigate mentorship scenarios, plan mentor outings, and important goals/milestones to hit with your Little.
The goal of our mentor training session is to give you an overview of how our mentorship program works and how to succeed as a mentor. While there will always be situations we cannot predict, we know our mentorship sessions will give you the tools and knowledge to help you through many scenarios.
